A special screening of the Nepali documentary film Road to Everest will be held in Hong Kong to raise support for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of families displaced by recent floods and landslides in Rasuwa, Nepal. Organized by the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) Hong Kong, the screening will take place on Sunday, November 1, at 5:00 PM at Sunbeam Whampoa Cinema Hall in Hung Hom, Kowloon.

Held on the occasion of the 11th NRNA Day, the screening carries the slogan, “Experience Everest. Support Rasuwa.” The event aims to take audiences on an inspiring journey to Everest, showcase Nepal’s Himalayan heritage, and support families affected by the disasters in Rasuwa.

NRNA Hong Kong announced the screening and unveiled the official poster at a press conference on Thursday. According to the organizers, the decision to hold a second screening follows an enthusiastic response to the film’s first screening in Hong Kong and growing demand from audiences.

NRNA Hong Kong General Secretary Indra Pun said supporting Nepali filmmakers who are telling their own stories despite limited resources and investment is a shared responsibility.

“For a long time, we were unable to tell our own stories ourselves. Now, Nepalis are trying to tell their stories through their own investment. We are proud to see such efforts being made despite limited resources,” Pun said.

He also encouraged children and young people from the Nepali community in Hong Kong to watch the documentary to learn more about Mount Everest and Nepal’s Himalayan heritage.

Kabita Gurung, Vice President of NRNA Hong Kong and coordinator of the screening, said the second screening was being organized in response to audience demand following the success of the first show.

She said the event would provide another opportunity for those who could not attend the earlier screening and help introduce Nepal’s Himalayan stories to a wider audience in Hong Kong. She added that preparations, including the cinema booking, had been completed and invited everyone to participate.

NRNA Female Vice President Tika Gurung said Road to Everest goes beyond the story of climbing Mount Everest and highlights the effects of climate change on the Himalayan region.

She noted that NRNA International Coordination Council (ICC) has already reached an understanding with We Will Rise Foundation to help bring the documentary to international audiences. She also encouraged NRNA National Coordination Councils (NCCs) worldwide to explore opportunities to organize screenings.

“The film also speaks about the impact of climate change on the Himalayas. We plan to take it to audiences around the world, and I encourage NCCs worldwide to organize screenings as well,” she said.

NRNA Hong Kong President Anu Rai said Road to Everest is more than a mountaineering documentary. It also portrays the contributions, courage, struggles, challenges and determination of the Sherpa community, alongside the impact of climate change on the Himalayas.

“This is not just a film about Everest. It also tells the story of the Sherpa community their contributions, courage, struggles, challenges and determination as well as the effects of climate change. Everest is a symbol of identity and pride for all of us,” Rai said.

She urged Nepalis living in Hong Kong to attend the screening and support the initiative for families affected by the disasters in Rasuwa.

The press conference was moderated by Bishwonath Ghising, Secretary of NRNA Hong Kong. Also present were former NRNA Hong Kong President Gokarna Dhakal, office-bearers Manoj Gautam, Arjun Gauchan, Manish Limbu and Sabitra Ingname, as well as Rita Gurung, President of Nepal Club Hong Kong, among others.

Produced by We Will Rise Foundation, Road to Everest is a 50-minute documentary that follows a journey from sea level to the summit of Mount Everest. Through this journey, the film explores mountaineering, human courage, Nepal’s Himalayan heritage and climate change.

Following special screenings in Nepal and its grand premiere in Hong Kong, the production team plans to bring the documentary to wider international audiences through film festivals and special screenings worldwide.
